Our Story

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are owned and run by Ant and Tessa Baber. The Baber family were one of the earliest pioneers in the area, settling here in 1886. Of English and Irish descent, they carry with them a love for Africa’s wide-open spaces, adventure and a passion for its wildlife. In the mid 1990’s Ant and Tessa renovated an old ranch house, which became Ant’s Nest and, in 2003, built Ant’s Hill above a spectacular gorge, designing each room to make the most of the magnificent view. Our two beautiful bush homes are located on their own private game reserve, nestled in the folds of the magnificent Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province. Easy to reach, we are situated about three hours drive from OR Tambo International Airport and road transfers and private charters can be arranged from any destination.

The classic and spacious bush homes are owner designed and built using local stone and thatch that blend into the surroundings, setting the scene to give our guests the most memorable unique bushveld safari experience of a lifetime! We welcome all ages and cater for individuals; couples; riders, families or groups of friends traveling together. We specialise in a home from home experience, delicious al-fresco dining, ultimate flexibility and a vast variety of safari activities.  Our incredibly hospitable team will welcome you as a guest and we ensure you will leave as a friend!  Our knowledgeable guides will accompany you on game viewing experiences; tailoring your day to suit you, there are no fixed times, wake up when you want and leave on your activity of choice when it suits you.

Rated # 1 out of 68 lodgings in the Waterberg

The staff went out of their way to ensure each day was tailor made to suit us. The horses were exceptional with fabulous temperaments to suit all our abilities from beginner upwards. There was an abundance of wildlife at Ant’s Hill, we saw and learnt so much every day. Our daughter celebrated her 14th birthday at the lodge, the birthday song performed by the ladies will be fondly remembered and of course we will never forget the most amazing chocolate birthday cake! We will treasure our wonderful experience and memories forever. We miss you all and look forward to visiting again.

My husband and I spent 4 fabulous days here. The experience of riding among giraffes, wart hogs and wildebeests beats anything I’ve ever done in the States! The horses were excellent and they went out of their way to match horse and rider, changing if you weren’t satisfied. The accommodations were lovely and relaxing, the surroundings stunning, and the food was out of this world. We had gourmet, beautifully presented food at every meal. The entire staff was friendly and helpful and all went out of their way to be sure you were satisfied with everything.
